Venus Boyz 2002 Lesbian Movie Review Film Review

Venus Boyz 2002
5 Stars

A film journey through a universe of female masculinity. A legendary Drag King Night in New York is the point of departure for an odyssey to transgendered worlds, where women become men - some for a night, others for their whole lives. What motivates them? What changes take place? What do they dream of? The drag kings of New York meet in clubs and change lustfully into their male alter egos, parodying them and exploring male eroticism and power strategies. In London we see women experiment with hormones to become new men and 'cyborgs'. Masculinity and transformation as performance, subversion or existential necessity.

I dig documentaries, always love seeing the reality of other peoples lives set out for me in a 2 hour or less easy to comprehend platform.

I had always wanted to see this documentary and I am super glad I did, many of the thoughts and questions I have said to myself about gender roles and the blurring of those lines were expressed by many of the characters in this documentary. I say characters only because they portray themselves as their day to day self, and as their drag characters. So to specify a specific person in this review would be specifying the character, whom is several persona's or realities.

It is really awesome to watch such a lucid, open exploration of gender which is told from several different perspectives. You should definitely watch this if you get a chance it was well well well worth it.

If you are looking for a drag king documentary, YOU HAVE FOUND IT
If you are looking for a gender identity documentary, YOU HAVE FOUND IT
If you are looking for a societal gender exploration documentary, YOU HAVE FOUND IT

Mango Kiss 2004 Lesbian Movie Review Film Review 4.5 STARS

Mango Kiss 2004
4.5 Stars

Lou and Sass are performance art partners and best friends who have recently moved to San Francisco. Shy Lou's life turns upside down when she confesses her passion for the outgoing Sass, and they change from roommates to lovers. The path to romantic bliss takes a wide detour, however, when they meet new friends with some rather frisky ideas.

The beginning - "This is a cautionary tail" told in a narrative by Lou, and it is cute how she explains their journey to San Francisco. Lou is a lot like every androgynous lesbian I have ever met. Self confident, adorable, and opinionated with the knowledge of living.

The Acting - Is believable and the chemistry is palpable. I am a firm believer that if the acting sucks in the movie, it doesn't matter how good the story is, it will suck suck suck in my eyes. But I do believe that when the acting is on point it can make a moderately amusing story a brilliant masterpiece. This is most definitely the case with this movie, a moderately amusing story line is lifted to an excellent movie with the acting and chemistry.

Story line - I love how it pauses for Lou to explain the characters. It totally adds a different level of funness (yes I made that word up) that the story line wouldn't have with out it. The casting is done very well Not just for the leads Lou and Sass but also for the supporting characters. I can see many of my friends in their faces. Which is important to make the story line believable. The story line is a little slow, not slow enough to make you go to sleep but slow enough to make you loose interest at moments. So I am taking away a half a star for the slowness. I also like the tattoo headers that lead you threw the story line. Very cool, they are obviously painted on tattoos, but they still look cool.

Sexy Scenes - Very Sexy, I do beleive that they were getting off groping each others breast SEXY. Then Lou starts talking about it and yummy well said. HOT

Non Monogamy Experiment - eeekkkkk. To each their own, but I seriously don't identify with this, the mother said it all. "In theory its great, but in practice it gets kind of messy"

The make believe - these moments are cute but I really don't get the point, although it might have something to do with the whole role playing that they are getting into with each other, moderately cute but a little infantile if you ask me. It kind of takes away from the sexyness of it all.

Cinematography - GREAT - a lot of times lesbian titles look like they were shot with a camcorder, because of this i like to note how good or bad the chromatography is, so that you can get an idea of how it looks.

The Ending - Loved it, it roled around so that I felt that it culminated so I can sleep at night, there is nothing worse than being left to wonder...... what the hell just happened.

As Far as a movie goes I really didn't identify with the storyline or the characters at all, the whole Domination roleplay thing is not something that I have ever been interested in. But then i think to myself that I don't have to have a paralleled to the story to find it entertaining. Like does every person find a parallel to Robo Cop, I certainly don't, but I found it very entertaining. As I do with this movie. This isn't a must see, but it is certainly a you should watch it if you get the opportunity.

Love & Suicide 2006 Lesbian Movie Review Film Review 2 STARS

Echoing Peter Jackson's 1994 drama Heavenly Creatures, this gripping tale of a female friendship gone awry is also based on a true -- and tragic -- story. When Kaye (Sarah Reardon) moves to New Orleans with her family and finds herself friendless in the halls of a new high school, she quickly latches on to the aggressively sexual Emily (Stella Johnson), whose influence ignites a dangerous passion between them.

The Story - I can certainly relate to the story line. Two High School Girls Fall in love, and struggle as a couple and individuals with being lesbians. One of the girls mothers is a strict religious woman who says things like "Homosexuals are going to hell" So I get it, very moving, and I gave this movie 1 star for the story line being relatable and another star for the ending (Ill get into the ending later)

Acting - SUCKED, the rhythm of the acting was all over the place, marks were missed and you could tell that they were acting. Their was some moderate talent in the bunch but the acting only made me think I could have done this movie.

Cinematography - SUCKED, again it made me think I could get a bunch of my friends together with my Camcorder write a moderate script and make a movie. So I guess it inspired me, that is a plus!

Sound - I have never made a movie so I am sure it is very hard to get the sound right from scene to scene, but this was OFF. In one scene it would be as quite as a whisper with some sort of background sound that took away from the dialog and then in the next scene the dialog would be so loud I had to turn it down and it freaked out the cats.

The ending - I like it, It was sad, but I thought it was a great spin on a truth that our community deals with every day. So I gave this another star for the ending.

So in short it is not a must see, but it isn't a total bust.

FingerSmith Lesbian Movie Review Film Review 5 STARS

FingerSmith 2005
Very Full Stars !!!!!

Susan Trinder has been brought up in a house of thieves in London. She gets sucked into a plot by a family friend. She becomes Maud Lilly's maid so as to get her to marry Mr Richard Rivers. They plan to put Maud in a mental asylum once she marries so they can claim access to her £40,000. The plan becomes a nuisance when Susan mistakenly falls in love with Maud.

The best movie ever, if you like these period pieces. I didnt expect very much from this movie. As I was watching it I was blown away. It is long, the first half is was brilliant as a love story as a plot and when it was over I litterly clapped I was so excited there was another Hour in and half to go :)

The second half was even better the twist and turns that it takes you on will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. The love that these two women have for each other is amazing enough to stand alone as a movie. But then as the plot thickens this movie becomes a masterpiece.

Character - the characters were bold and relatable. From the servants to the Uncle every actor played their part flawlessly. LOVED THEM ALL

The Plot - Will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time, and you will be wanting more.

The ending - If you have read any of my other reviews you will know that I hate movies that leave you hanging on at the end, saying "What the hell" This movie takes you on a whirl wind ride of emotions and then plops you back into a world that you wanted all along for this couple. HAPPY ENDING, leaving you feeling GREAT

Cheers!!!!!

Sabrina Matthews HILARIOUS lesbian stand up comedian

Sabrina Matthews Website - Sabrina Matthews Myspace

We first heard of Sabrina Matthews when she became our friend on MySpace, I thought she was just another lesbian surfing MySpace for the word lesbian, and subsequently stumbled onto our profile. But when our chum Wheezer from The Cooter Cafe Podcast asked us to instigate an interview with Sabrina, we realized she was a comedian.

The Cooter Cafe Interview with Sabrina

We then realized she was going to be at SisterSpace 2009, we still had not listened to her mp3s or knew much more about her other than she was a comedian. I love watching comedians, but I am frequently disappointed because if someone is on stage as a comedian, I have the expectation to be rolling on the floor with laughter. Sabrina Matthews came on stage and I was moderately amused at first and then I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. As I looked around the room she had kept everyone in their seats, and everyone was holding their sides from the pain that she had inflicted. You know of the laughter that you turn to who every is next to you and in the midst of yet another bought of laughter you squeeze out the words, "oh god, it hurts".

Now when i think of Sabrina Matthews I think "She made me laugh so hard it HURT"

Subsequently after her performance (is that what it is called with a comedian). She stuck around, and the following day as we were driving around picking up trash (we volunteered for the trash crew for the weekend, not as horrible as you might think quite fun actually) and one of our two hour volunteers spotted Sabrina on the steps of the performers quarters (the white house). The volunteer had a thick accent I think Latin of some sort and she screamed across the 200 yard span that stood between her and Sabrina "You make me pee my pant". Sabrina walked over and struck up a conversation with the 9 of us, introduced her self personally to each of us. At this point I was so enveloped by the weekend I had completely forgot that I had communications with her prior to the weekend, (Now looking back I wonder if she knew who Randi and I were, probably not, if I didn't have a clue who she was then how could she know who we were).

After we finished our trash duties we were heading down to lunch, Sabrina was sitting down the table from us and in front of us was about 8 women with no shirts and painted upper bodies (really cool I might add) at some point 2 of the women started to partake in some cupcake madness which involved nipples and the yummy cupcakes which had been presented as desert (I had about 5 of them threw the weekend they were freaking yummy). These two topless painted gals seemed to share in my opinion of the yummyness. They were licking the yummyness off of one another exposed breast for such lengths of time that i was sure someone was going to have to resuscitate them due to lack of air intake. Sabrina, was making comments to which I couldn't hear because the laughter to her comments was so loud.

So if you every have a chance to watch Sabrina Matthews Stand up routine, DO NOT MISS IT, and if you hang out on a regular basis with Sabrina Mathews, then I hope you wear Depends (the adult diaper) cause I am sure you are contently peeing your pants.

And Sabrina Matthews or whom ever was present at the cupcake nipple incident at SisterSpace 2009, I ask "What was it that you/ she said?"

Cheers!!!!!!

Lesbian Consumer Review Timex Expedition Watch Indiglo

True Story. I am rummaging threw my drawers in the gym looking for a program that I need to install on my computer, and I come across a watch that had been long lost to my memory as well as being on my wrist. I get all excited because I can remember when I bought it, and how excited I was that I could just push the knob on the side and it would light up like magic on my wrist. I was totally expecting that if my new found watch was going to enter my world of now that I was going to have to replace the batteries or get some work done on it. Because in my experience most thing that have been lost to you for years, need such attention to bring it back to life, and back to your standards of working.

Surprise Surprise, the time on the watch was dead on, and the date was as well now as when I bought it (probably more so) i love me this watch. it is a Timex Expedition Indiglo WR 50M.

It really seems like so much just doesn't work the way it is supposed to anymore, or that you have to have an excessive knowledge of some high falootin technology in order to get it to work. Finding this watch is a lot like finding my faith in things that just fucking work!

Bare with me for a moment as i feel a need to rant. If everything worked like this watch then maybe just maybe we as a new found technology people wouldn't be so disillusioned when our damn computer farts at you and says "operation unauthorized" or maybe if we never got so indulged in such technologies then we wouldn't feel this anxt.

There are times when I would like to take my pickup truck and all my camping gear and just live in the woods back to the primitive existence that our fore-mothers held so dear to their hearts, and somewhere we have gotten lost in the megabits, and the ram, and the windows operating system that we have lost the warmth of a campfire, and experiencing each other on a personal level.

Catch 22 if that were the way of the world, the what if's, the lets take it all back, you wouldn't be reading this blog, and our website would cease to exist. So I guess you have to take the good with the bad, the computer failures that have you pulling you hair out, with the momentary jubilation of a Timex watch from yesteryear that despite me putting it in a drawer kept working and was there waiting, keeping time, ready to glow at a touch of the knob.

And know I sit here listening to the ticking of such said watch in my left ear. And I remember that the loudness of its time keeping might be why I put it away in the first place.

Hannah Free 2010 Lesbian Film Review Movie Review LOVE IT

Hannah Free – Film Festival Obligations/ ScreeningsOfficial Website

If you are in for a tear jerker you are going to LOVE this movie. It will have you empathizing, laughing, crying and wanting to sit down with her, grab a cup of Joe and hear all about the stories from the past.

Synopsis - Hannah and Rachel grew up as little girls in the same small Midwest town, where traditional gender expectations eventually challenge their deep love for one another. Hannah becomes an adventurous, unapologetic lesbian and Rachel a strong but quiet homemaker. Weaving back and forth between past and present, the film reveals how the women maintained their love affair despite a marriage, a world war, infidelities, and family denial.

Hannah Free is a feature-length motion picture shot in HD for distribution in worldwide theatrical and ancillary markets.

IF YOU DON’T WANT A SPOILER DON’T READ BELOW

Set the Stage - Hannah is a woman, who has found herself in a nursing home. I don’t want to give too much away. But her partner for 40+ years is in the same home only down the hall. Her partner’s family will not allow Hanna to see her partner.

This story was well timed from beginning to end. You find yourself wanting to know more about each character. You are brought threw a journey with this lesbian couple as they grow up together find themselves with one another, and struggle through the wonder lust and the desire to hold on to a love that is so real.

Break my heart, and finding hope within a seemingly hopeless plight. Hannah finds help in a young woman who seems to just be in the home to visit old folks. But threw the movie a twist unveils itself and only adds to an already compelling story.

THE END – is one that you will not soon forget. It is timeless and this is where all of the tears are going to flow, with a mixture of tears and a surprising joy.

The Characters – are well casted and you believe every minute, movies are something that I watch to take myself into a situation and in order for me to LOVE it I have to believe it. The parts are so well performed that you find yourself lost for the duration of the movie. When the lights came on I didn’t want the movie to end.

The Film Quality – If you have read any of my other reviews you will find that one of my biggest pet peeves about a movie is when the film quality takes away from a film. This film is well made and seamlessly edited so if you are into crappy film quality movies, do not look here.

In closing – If you get a chance to catch this film at many of its film festival obligations this 2009 / 2010 season, you should be the first in line. If you read this review after it has excited Film Festivals then rent it buy it, you are going to love it. (But make sure you have some tissue handy you are going to need it)

Cheers......

"Dyke Bitch" Being Hated on, On a Friday Morning

It was a bright Friday morning, my partner and I were driving to work. When she stopped at a yellow light. The guy behind her was upset that he couldn’t run a red light and get to work a millisecond earlier than he would now get to work. He was yelling and screaming and shooting us the bird the entire red light (about 2 minutes). Our way of dealing with crazy drivers like that is to smile and wave, and say “have a nice day”. This usually pisses them off more than joining in on the excessive unwarranted angry behavior.

So the light turns green, and we drive threw turning left. He follows us, mere inches from our rear bumper. My Partner slams on the breaks and he has to swerve to avoid hitting our truck (which has a gay rainbow sticker on the back). The first chance he gets he pulls up next to us, and starts screaming at my partner, at this point he can’t see me. He proceeds to tell her “I am going to fucking kill you” “I will cut your fucking car in half”. I lean forward and he instantly recognizes some word usage that he could throw my way. He screams “Fucking dyke bitch” and speed off.

When I get called a dyke simply because of how I look (like a dyke) I see nothing but red. He cut us off at the next light and the red bull can that I had in my hand (only half full) was tossed at his car and landed on the hood with a lob throw and splashed all over his car (a perfect throw I can attribute to playing softball since I was 2 years old). At this point he stops at a green light and gets out of his car, and I promptly followed by getting out of the truck. He says “ oh you’re going to fucking throw a can at my car” I said “Yes I am, you want to call me a fucking dyke bitch that is what you fucking get” He replies with “I can see I was right” to which I become even more enraged and I say, “Yeah your fucking right, and this dyke bitch is going to kick your ass” as I took 3 big steps towards his car. My partner laid on the horn and didn’t stop to draw attention to the situation. He promptly got into his car and speed threw the now red light to get away from a situation that if the police had arrived would have been considered a Hate Crime via verbal assault……

Hate crimes (also known as bias-motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her perceived membership in a certain social group, usually defined by racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation.

"Hate crime" generally refers to criminal acts which are seen to have been motivated by hatred of one or more of the listed conditions. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters.

Is this incident a hate crime? Would he have been arrested if the police showed up? In my eyes it is, seeing the rainbow flag on the back of our truck enraged him. But My partner doesn’t look like a lesbian, so the slurs did not come out of his mouth until he laid eyes on me. And it escaladed even faster once he did see me. Could I have been charged with a crime? Probably? But one thing is for sure (hopefully) he will think twice next time before he calls someone a dyke in such a way again.

I always feel bad when this sort of instances are over. I think “I shouldn’t have been so aggressive, I should have handled things differently” and then my partner reminds me that without outbursts, and defiance against such hateful behavior people who insist on using such words like dyke as a weapon will not learn that it is a weapon, and there are repercussions for such behavior, weather it being charged with a hate crime or having a Dyke Bitch almost loose her mind on you. I can only hope that for every occurrences I have that it will prevent 1,000 more from happening.

Homophobia might be a Cartoon, but it still aint CUTE

This video is appalling..... Dan and Micheal are infect having a BBQ, with the people who have chosen to discriminate against them, I think Dan and Micheal should let this straight narrow minded couple have their damn BBQ, and sit in their bigoted house hold and wait for the day when their god will be more than happy to judge them at the pearly gates. I think that some religious folks might be sad to find out that they are not going to be allowed in, and they can watch all the gays, and lesbians walk right past them. MARRIED OR NOT BITATCHES......

Karmina's Debut ALbum "The Kiss"

"The Kiss" is the first video from Karmina's debut album, Backwards Into Beauty. Karmina's video features real-life couples who overcame the pressures of friends, familiy or cultures in order to be together. The song is influenced by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the imagery of painter Gustav Klimt, both of whom are big influences on Karmina members Kelly & Kamille.
